Caldwell Trust Company brings noted economist Stephen Moore to Venice Senior High School

Posted by Caldwell Trust

VENICE, FL - R. G. “Kelly” Caldwell Jr. always stays close to his roots in Venice. The CEO and president of Caldwell Trust Company, Kelly is also a graduate of Venice Senior High School, a proud Indian who likes to share the benefits of his success. The most recent instance of his philosophy occurred on Friday morning, February 27, when the company brought world-class economist Stephen Moore to the school. Moore presented a talk about the current economic situation and his outlook to 450 junior- and senior-year students, followed by a lively question-and-answer session. “I’m bullish on the economy,” he told the group.

One of Caldwell’s prestigious investment advisers, Moore was in town to address the company’s board of directors and trust officers. “Steve graciously made time on his schedule to meet with the students and I couldn’t have been more thrilled,” Kelly said. “Young people rarely have the opportunity to hear someone of his caliber. We’re delighted that we could bring Steve to them.”

Stephen Moore is an American economic writer and policy analyst who founded and served as president of the Club for Growth from 1999 to 2004. A member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, he frequently writes for their op-ed section and is known for advocating free-market policies and supply-side economics. He had been the Grover M. Hermann Fellow in Budgetary Affairs at the Heritage Foundation from 1983 through 1987 and was also was a fellow of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. He returned to the Heritage Foundation in 2014 as its chief economist.

Moore was the senior economist of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee under Chairman Dick Armey of Texas and an architect of the Armey flat tax proposal in 1995. He was also part of the research team hired by Americans For Fair Taxation to create the FairTax, the most co-sponsored tax reform proposal in Congress. In 1999 he founded the Club for Growth and was president until his resignation in 2004, raising $20 million to fund candidates for the 2004 elections. In 2005 he founded the Free Enterprise Fund with other prominent Club for Growth members including long-time Caldwell Trust company adviser Dr. Arthur B. Laffer and Mallory Factor. A partner in the firm Arduin, Laffer & Moore Econometrics, Moore released his seventh book in 2014. He holds a B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.A. from George Mason University in economics.

Moore’s talk at Venice Senior High School was the latest example of Caldwell’s interest in educating students for a career in finance or at least learning about economic aspects of the world they will soon enter. The company has been a table sponsor for USFSM Brunch since 2005 and established The Caldwell Trust Company Business Scholarship in 2011 to provide scholarships for students of the USF College of Business on the Sarasota Manatee campus.

Caldwell Trust Company introduces blogs with easy-to-understand financial advice

Posted by Sheryl Vieira

VENICE, FL - Caldwell Trust Company has introduced a series of blogs that provide solid financial advice in easy-to-understand language. With these brief articles—often accompanied by video presentations—members of Caldwell’s board of directors, its trust officers and other highly qualified staff members provide authoritative information on topics of importance to readers at different stages of their lives. Some even cover often-overlooked situations such as “Fido…What Will Happen to Him Once I’m Gone?”

Caldwell Trust Company provides the blogs as part of its commitment to providing a high level of service, not only to clients but also to others who seek additional guidance in reader-friendly financial matters. These blogs are posted online at http://blog.ctrust.com/. R. G. “Kelly” Caldwell, Jr., CEO and president, views them as one more example of the company’s commitment to its core values: to provide highly personalized service in a traditional manner and to remain an independent trust company, free of outside influences.

In one of her blogs, assistant vice president and trust officer Sonya Dlug presents an example of the many ways she helped “Gene,” a recently widowed woman suddenly faced with handling financial and health matters on her own. (http://blog.ctrust.com/sonya-dlug-assistant-vice-president-and-trust-officer). The Venice resident drew on 12 years of experience with Caldwell to assist “Gene.” Dlug held an associate’s degree from then-Manatee Community College when she joined the company as an intern in 2003 and became a trust assistant upon graduation from the University of South Florida in 2005. By 2010 she had become a trust officer and in 2014 was also named assistant vice president.

Sheryl Vieira, assistant vice president of marketing, implements the blogs and welcomes suggestions for topics. Topics of the available blogs include these, for example:
• Trusts & The Benefits: How to Make Sure Your Children Don’t Treat Their Inheritance Like They Won the Lottery
• How Can I Help My Granddaughter Pay for College?
• How to Help Aging Parents Protect Their Financial Assets
• How Does a Winter Resident Prove Florida Residency?

Caldwell Trust Company Moves into New Corporate Headquarters

Posted by Sheryl Vieira

VENICE, FL - Caldwell Trust Company moved into its new headquarters at 1400 Center Road, Venice, just before the holidays and starts the new year in its new building—but one thing is not new and will never change. That’s the company’s commitment to its core values, said R. G. “Kelly” Caldwell, Jr., CEO and president. “We will always be personal, traditional and independent, and we will remain faithful to ‘What We Believe,’ our founding principles. We have a plaque with these principles inside our grand foyer, where we see them every day,” he said.

A Paver brick walkway amid decorative plantings leads to the oversized front doors, which open on that 1,500-square-foot, 17-foot-high, marble-floored grand foyer. The Italianate-styled, one-story building is set on four acres of a ten-acre, park-like setting with a 55x25-foot garden courtyard and two parking lots. The structure has a 26-foot tall parapet in the center but is generally 18 feet tall, with 17-foot ceilings for the foyer and main conference room. Designed as a multifunction facility, the $3 million building’s classic look belies the sophisticated, high-technology equipment within. Kelly Caldwell said that construction exceeded code requirements for the 11,500-square-foot building, enabling it to withstand winds of up to 180 miles per hour. It contains a concrete-encased vault to protect valuable records.

Two 5,000-square-foot wings extend from the central core, each with a specific function. The left side, dedicated to operations, has been specially designed to house state-of-the-art computers and proprietary software. Trust administration services are provided from the right side, with private offices for client meetings.

A special feature of the central core is the 24x36-foot main conference room, which is equipped with audiovisual systems, videoconferencing equipment and additional state-of-the-art technology. The building also contains a library, catering kitchen, print shop and workout room. Classic, timeless materials and high-quality appointments are used throughout.
“Our new home is more than the realization of a long-held dream,” Kelly Caldwell said. “It’s the physical embodiment of our commitment to our clients. Its many features enhance our ability to provide services in the most cost-effective, secure manner.”

Chartered on November 1, 1993, Caldwell Trust Company acquired its first client the next day and established headquarters in a now-outgrown space in Venice. It opened its first Sarasota office in 1998 and replaced it in 2009 with a larger space at 1561 Main Street, Sarasota, which remains in operation. “We were managing $400 million at the time. Now we’ve passed $800 million,” Caldwell said. “With this new building, our roots have grown even deeper in Venice. We are grateful to our clients, whose faith in us has made this move both necessary and possible.

“Finally, we extend special thanks to our contractors—all locally based. They’ve exceeded our expectations in creating a building that will last forever,” he said. The team includes general contractor Halfacre Construction Company and owner representatives Eric W. DeVaughn and Sam Green, S&E Renovations, Inc., Nokomis; architect/designers Jeff Matthews, AIA/AICP, and Mike Coviello of Venice Design Group, Nokomis; Holly Logan, ASID, of H. V. Logan Design, LLC, Sarasota; Strayer Surveying & Mapping, Inc., Venice; Crawford Williams Engineering, Sarasota; Apex Consulting Engineers of Bradenton; and Hazeltine Nurseries, Venice.
