VENICE, FL - Caldwell Trust Company moved into its new headquarters at 1400 Center Road, Venice, just before the holidays and starts the new year in its new building—but one thing is not new and will never change. That’s the company’s commitment to its core values, said R. G. “Kelly” Caldwell, Jr., CEO and president. “We will always be personal, traditional and independent, and we will remain faithful to ‘What We Believe,’ our founding principles. We have a plaque with these principles inside our grand foyer, where we see them every day,” he said.
A Paver brick walkway amid decorative plantings leads to the oversized front doors, which open on that 1,500-square-foot, 17-foot-high, marble-floored grand foyer. The Italianate-styled, one-story building is set on four acres of a ten-acre, park-like setting with a 55x25-foot garden courtyard and two parking lots. The structure has a 26-foot tall parapet in the center but is generally 18 feet tall, with 17-foot ceilings for the foyer and main conference room. Designed as a multifunction facility, the $3 million building’s classic look belies the sophisticated, high-technology equipment within. Kelly Caldwell said that construction exceeded code requirements for the 11,500-square-foot building, enabling it to withstand winds of up to 180 miles per hour. It contains a concrete-encased vault to protect valuable records.
Two 5,000-square-foot wings extend from the central core, each with a specific function. The left side, dedicated to operations, has been specially designed to house state-of-the-art computers and proprietary software. Trust administration services are provided from the right side, with private offices for client meetings.
A special feature of the central core is the 24x36-foot main conference room, which is equipped with audiovisual systems, videoconferencing equipment and additional state-of-the-art technology. The building also contains a library, catering kitchen, print shop and workout room. Classic, timeless materials and high-quality appointments are used throughout.
“Our new home is more than the realization of a long-held dream,” Kelly Caldwell said. “It’s the physical embodiment of our commitment to our clients. Its many features enhance our ability to provide services in the most cost-effective, secure manner.”
Chartered on November 1, 1993, Caldwell Trust Company acquired its first client the next day and established headquarters in a now-outgrown space in Venice. It opened its first Sarasota office in 1998 and replaced it in 2009 with a larger space at 1561 Main Street, Sarasota, which remains in operation. “We were managing $400 million at the time. Now we’ve passed $800 million,” Caldwell said. “With this new building, our roots have grown even deeper in Venice. We are grateful to our clients, whose faith in us has made this move both necessary and possible.
“Finally, we extend special thanks to our contractors—all locally based. They’ve exceeded our expectations in creating a building that will last forever,” he said. The team includes general contractor Halfacre Construction Company and owner representatives Eric W. DeVaughn and Sam Green, S&E Renovations, Inc., Nokomis; architect/designers Jeff Matthews, AIA/AICP, and Mike Coviello of Venice Design Group, Nokomis; Holly Logan, ASID, of H. V. Logan Design, LLC, Sarasota; Strayer Surveying & Mapping, Inc., Venice; Crawford Williams Engineering, Sarasota; Apex Consulting Engineers of Bradenton; and Hazeltine Nurseries, Venice.
