Community leader J. Mack Reid has joined the board of directors of Caldwell Trust Company through a unanimous board vote. “This is great news for us,” says R. G. “Kelly” Caldwell Jr., CEO and president. “Mack has made a lifelong commitment to serving the community, especially through the Boys & Girls Clubs.”
Mack’s dedication to the Boys & Girls Clubs began at age 10 when he discovered a welcoming Club in Alabama. Later he became arts and crafts director while attending Jacksonville State University and has been an employee of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America ever since—for 46 years.He came to Sarasota in the 1970s to work at what was then the Boys Club of Sarasota County. He moved away to other Clubs, but in 1989 the Boys & Girls Clubs of America asked him to return to Sarasota as CEO and president. His task was to reverse the precarious condition of the Sarasota Club. “They were ready to turn out the lights,” Mack said.
He didn’t just save the Club; he grew it. Under his leadership, it expanded to become the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, an entity comprising four clubs and six after-school programs within the county. “I saw the Clubs reach out to serve more youngsters than I could ever have imagined,” he said. He retired as CEO and president in 2011.
But he didn’t really retire. Mack never will. He immediately signed on to head the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County Foundation. Although he “retired” from that post earlier this year, he is already on the road as a consultant for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Now he has agreed to share his talent and time with Caldwell Trust Company. “We are thrilled to have Mack with us. He is very highly regarded in the community,” says Kelly Caldwell. “He brings an outstanding record of accomplishment and will open many new doors and opportunities for our company. He will be a great addition to our wonderful board.”
